Babe actor James Cromwell could be facing jail time if found guilty of a misdemeanour offence over a protest at an orca show at SeaWorld earlier this year.

The star was charged with trespassing, which means he could face up to 90 days in jail or a $400 fine if found guilty, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.

The incident on July 24 saw the star and six other activists interrupt the 'Orca Encounter' show at SeaWorld.

Cromwell and the other protestors were forcibly removed from the arena, after the actor spoke through a megaphone about the difference between orcas' lives in captivity and open water.

Cromwell has said in the past that he would rather go to jail than pay fines in regards to his activism.

Back in June, the Oscar-nominated actor was sentenced to jail over his role in a power plant protest in New York back in 2015.

In 2013, he was also arrested alongside another protestor after taking a stand against animal testing at the University of Wisconsin.

Cromwell came to prominence for his Oscar-nominated role as Farmer Hoggett in Babe, and recently revealed that he had his iconic quote "that'll do, pig" as his ringtone.

He will next be seen in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom where he will play Benjamin Lockwood, a scientist developing the technology to clone dinosaurs.
