Baby boy who survived the crash that killed his mother dies in hospital

A baby boy has died one week on from the horrific crash which claimed the life of his mother.

Eight-month-old Luciano Newman was critically injured in the collision in south London on January 13.

His mother Nicole Newman, 23, who was pushing the pram at the time of the crash, died at the scene in Croydon Road, Penge.

Luciano died one week later, on Sunday.

Baby Luciano underwent emergency surgery last week but sadly medics were unable to save the eight-month-old from his injuries.

Speaking last week his grandmother Gabriella Bianco-Ashley described Luciano as "so beautiful".

Witnesses described how Ms Newman could be heard screaming "where's my baby" as she lay injured.

One witness of the aftermath of the incident described the scene in a video on Facebook.

"Boy what a sad start for 2019. (I was) just passing, going about my business and I came across such a horrific accident. A car hit a babymother while she was trying to cross the road."

The driver of the car, who stopped at the scene and was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries, is co-operating with police, Scotland Yard said.

Officers are continuing to appeal for witnesses and have urged anyone with dash cam footage, including footage from the minutes leading up to the collision, which happened at 8.08pm, to come forward.
