Baffled fans of new Doctor Who 'not loving it' for the same reason

Doctor Who fans have been left unimpressed after new episodes of the iconic BBC show aired tonight (Saturday, May 11). But not because of new star Ncuti Gatwa, who is the new Doctor Who.

In fact, the actor saved the day for viewers eagerly waiting for the new episodes of the latest series to air on BBC One. While viewers were hugely impressed with Ncuti's performance in the first episode entitled Space Babies, they were not as happy with the storyline.

Doctor Who has now returned for eight brand new episodes after a Christmas Day special gave fans their first proper look at new star Ncuti. A double bill of new episodes, Space Babies and The Devil’s Chord landed on BBC iPlayer tonight before showing on BBC One later today.

But its the Space Babies episode that appears to have left a lot of viewers baffled and annoyed. The episode sees the Doctor and Ruby go to the distant future to discover a baby farm run by the babies themselves. But a chilling monster is prowling the lower decks.

On Twitter/ X, @chris_facey_uk commented: "Space babies? Really? Pretty poor first episode for me.

While @RiverCavy wrote: "Not loving this Space Babies thing tbh #DoctorWho." And @FakeGlennMiller shared: "This is appalling. Gatwa's a promising Doctor but dear god, this script/plot is dismal & the CGI to make the babies talk is terrible."

And @deeokelly1 added: "My least favourite thing is babies CGI'd to make them look like they're speaking. Why oh why."

"Space babies….. talk about scraping the barrel," @SternhammerWulf commented.

But fans were unanimous on one crucial critique. They love the new Doctor. @allontheboard commented: "We absolutely love Doctor Who. Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson are amazing together. We can’t wait to see more of their adventures in the future."

And @alxciii wrote: "Actually in love with Ncuti Gatwa as The Doctor." @mishybabez_ added: "Casting Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson as 15th Doctor & Ruby Sunday is perfection I love them both so much."

@GrantSRivers shared: "Thoroughly enjoying #NcutiGatwa as the new Doctor, INCREDIBLE!" And @terrettcorey proclaimed: "Ncuti Gatwa IS the Doctor. What a star."

And @AndyGibsonTV shared: "Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson have completely rejuvinated BBC Doctor Who. I loved the Christmas Special and Space Babies is a fantastic introduction to the new breed of characters. Long live The Doctor & Ruby Sunday!"
