The Great British Bake Off saw first contestant Will sent home in Cake Week after struggling to make a successful buttercream.

The 45-year-old former charity director failed in his attempts to make swiss meringue buttercream for his signature sandwich cakes, and then split the buttercream for his showstopper home cake.

After host Matt Lucas announced he had been eliminated Will said: "Somebody's got to go first and obviously I'm disappointed but I'm proud to have made it.

Will's signature ginger square sandwich cakes were branded "disappointing" by judge Prue Leith.

He told her: "My buttercream didn't work twice," to which Leith replied: "The curse of the tent."

Noel Fielding revealed that Will must live near him as he recognised his showstopper 'First London Home' cake, and said he thought it was "brilliant".

But Paul Hollywood told him he had overbaked every single one of his layered sponges.

She said: "I'm still here - I cant believe it! Next week I want to impress the judges and make myself proud as well."
