Scotland Yard has launched a murder probe after a woman was found dead at a house in south-west London following an assault.

The woman, believed to be aged 62, was found dead at a home in Balham at around 11.40pm on Monday. It is understood she had been assaulted, Scotland Yard said in a statement.

She was the second woman killed in just 24 hours. A 35-year-old woman died after she was found suffering an abdominal injury in Ilford early on Monday.

The Metropolitan Police and London Ambulance Service were scrambled to an address on Balham Park Road last night after reports that a woman had died. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man, believed aged 66, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody at a south London police station. The man and woman were known to each other, police said.

A spokesman for the Met said: "A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a woman in Balham.

"Police were called at approximately 11.40pm on Monday, November 12, to reports of a woman deceased at an address on Balham Park Road.

"Officers attended along with colleagues from the London Ambulance Service.

"The woman, believed to be aged 62, was pronounced dead at the scene. It is believed she had been assaulted.

"Her next-of-kin have been informed. A special post mortem will be scheduled in due course.

"A man, believed aged 66, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody at a south London police station.

"The man and woman were known to each other.

"Enquiries continue by detectives from the Met's Homicide and Major Crime Command."
