Bandstand to be removed from park after being set on fire by vandals

A BANDSTAND will be removed from a park after it was set alight by vandals. 

We previously reported police were called to Overtoun Park in Rutherglen at around 12.40am on Saturday, June 1 following a report of a fire at the park's bandstand.

Cops previously said the fire is being treated as wilful and they were investigating the incident.

Now, the council has confirmed they have been told by contractors the bandstand is unsafe due to fire damage.

They said it will be dismantled and removed while they look into restoring it.

In a post shared on Facebook, South Lanarkshire Council wrote: "We have been advised by our contractors that the Overtoun Park Bandstand is unsafe following fire damage.

"The Bandstand will now be carefully dismantled and removed from its current position whilst consideration is given to restoration works."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "We received a report of a fire at Overtoun Park, Rutherglen, around 12.40am on Saturday, June 1, 2024.

"The fire is being treated as wilful and enquiries are ongoing."
