Barack Obama turned down a cameo in Netflix's 3 Body Problem in the most hilarious way, according to showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss.

While speaking to USA TODAY, the pair revealed how the former President of the United States of America, who served in the White House between 2009 and 2017, came back to them with a witty response following their invitation.

"[He] did sign a very funny note though, when we tried to get him for a cameo," shared Benioff. "It was to the effect of, 'In case there ever is a real alien invasion, I think I should probably save myself for that crisis.'"

Weiss, who famously ran Game of Thrones alongside Benioff for the entirety of its run, added: "He wants to keep his powder dry in case there's a real thing".

Adapted from Liu Cixin's dense sci-fi novel published in 2008, which kickstarted the author's Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy, 3 Body Problem revolves around a past, present and future where Earth encounters an alien civilisation.

Obama previously told The New York Times that he'd enjoyed Cixin's work while putting his feet up as President.

"The stuff I read just to escape ends up being a mix of things — some science fiction. For a while, there was a three-volume science-fiction novel, the Three-Body Problem series, which was just wildly imaginative, really interesting," he shared.

"It wasn't so much sort of character studies as it was just this sweeping — The scope of it was immense. So that was fun to read, partly because my day-to-day problems with Congress seem fairly petty — not something to worry about. Aliens are about to invade."

3 Body Problem is now streaming on Netflix.
