Barcelona to revamp Camp Nou: ‘Espai Barca’ project will see stadium capacity increase to 105,000

Barcelona have unveiled plans for a spectacular new stadium to improve their current Camp Nou home and take capacity to over 100,000 fans.

The Camp Nou opened in 1957 and currently has space for 99,354 spectators.

However, it is showing the signs of age and the Catalan club have been looking at making improvements to the ground for a number of years.

On Saturday, president Josep Maria Bartomeu outlined plans for the new ’Espai Barça’ (Barça Space), which will include the construction of a new Camp Nou with a capacity of 105,000 fans.

As part of the redevelopment, the Miniestadi, which is next to the Camp Nou, will be demolished and a new stadium – which will be named after Johan Cruyff – built at the club's training ground.

The Estadi Johan Cruyff will have a capacity of 6,000 and will be used by Barca B and FC Barcelona Femeni, the women’s team.

In the site of the Miniestadi, there will be a new Palau for indoor sports, such as basketball and handball.

Next to the redeveloped Camp Nou, there will be offices, a bigger club shop, more restaurants and the stadium tour experience.

Barca say the ’Espai Barça’ will be the “best sporting complex in the world, in the middle of a great city”.
