The Bay has revealed a new look at season 3 lead Marsha Thomason, who'll soon be taking over from former top biller Morven Christie.

When the popular crime drama was renewed early last year, ITV confirmed that Christie would not be back as DS Lisa Armstrong, despite the character acting as the protagonist in the previous two instalments.

Instead the upcoming third chapter, which kicks off on Wednesday (January 12), sees Thomason's newly-appointed family liaison officer DS Jenn Townsend thrown in at the deep end when a body is found on her very first day on the job.

If she has any chance of solving the premature death of the aspiring young boxer, DS Townsend must get under the skin of a grieving and complicated family – and you can view a sneak peek of what's in store for Townsend in the exclusive sizzle reel above.

Daniel Ryan, Erin Shanagher, Thomas Law and Andrew Dowbiggin are back as DI Anthony 'Tony' Manning, DS Karen Hobson, DC Eddie Martin and DS James Clarke, respectively.

The Bay's first season, which premiered in March 2019, saw Armstrong assigned to a missing person investigation in Morecambe Bay, Lancashire. As she dug deeper into the case, she discovered that she had a personal, potentially compromising link to the family involved.

The second series, which kicked off in January 2021, saw Armstrong dealing with the fallout, as well as trying to prove herself when she's asked to help solve a murder.

Talking about the differences between Armstrong and Townsend, creator Daragh Carville described the latter as a "breath of fresh air".

Carville told Radio Times: "Lisa was very much rooted in the world of The Bay and the world of Morecambe; that's where she lived her whole life. So I knew our new character should be not like that, she shouldn't be rooted there.

"Jenn, she's really different from Lisa. Jenn is kind of empathetic to a fault, and I think she does find it harder to kind of… leave work at work.

"She's got a family of her own and she's in a new relationship, and she's moved to this new place; she's got a new job, so there's a lot of reinvention going on."

The Bay series 3 premieres on ITV on Wednesday, January 12 at 9pm.
