BBC adapts Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds for TV

The BBC is remaking Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds into a contemporary TV drama.

The iconic 1963 movie starred Tippi Hedren as Melanie Daniels, a wealthy San Francisco socialite who follows a potential boyfriend to a small town in California where birds have started terrorising the residents.

However, the BBC's take will have a few noticeable differences.

Produced by Heyday Television (which is owned by Harry Potter producer David Heyman), The Birds will remain true to Daphne du Maurier's original 1952 novella of the same name.

Thus, the BBC take will be set in rural Cornwall, where a farmhand and his community is being terrorised by flocks of birds and seagulls shortly after the end of the Second World War.

The Birds will be written by Irish playwright and writer Conor McPherson, who previously adapted the novella as a play in 2009. His previous directing and writing credits include films The Eclipse and The Actors.

It's not the first time the BBC has gone in for a Hitchcock-inspired drama over recent months.

Earlier this year, BBC Two aired original drama The Replacement that drew high praise and Hitchcock comparisons, before the totally underwhelming ending left fans less than impressed.

But we should be safe in du Maurier's hands.
