Following the huge success of last year's now Golden Globe Award-winning The Night Manager, the BBC is once again teaming up again with AMC to adapt another of John le Carré's novels for television.

Why change a winning formula, eh?

Early this morning (January 15), it was announced at the TCAs that a television adaptation of le Carré's 1963 novel The Spy Who Came in From the Cold is in the works and will be co-produced by BBC and AMC.

The novel follows British intelligence officer Alex Leamas in 1962, the height of the Cold War, whose network of agents in East Berlin has been ripped the shreds following the building of the Berlin Wall and the actions of East German counter-intelligence officer Hans-Dieter Mundt.

Leamas is soon sent back to East Germany with a chance to get revenge, but since when have espionage missions ever been easy?

The script for the adaptation is set to be written by Academy Award winner Simon Beaufoy, who's worked on 2008's Slumdog Millionaire as well as The Full Monty, 127 Hours and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire.

"It's incredibly exciting to be working on the best Cold War spy story ever written," Simon said of the new project.

Author John le Carré is also looking forward to the new adaptation, saying: "I'm very excited by the project, and have great confidence in the team."

Confidence that no doubt stems from the fact that The Night Manager became the most awarded series at the 2017 Golden Globes last week, taking home Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television categories.

Here's hoping for a repeat of that then.

The Spy Who Came in From the Cold will air in the UK on BBC One.
