The BBC has confirmed the return of the hard-hitting drama Showtrial.

From writer Ben Richards, the drama examines trial-by-media with a new case each series — this time exploring a fictional case about police being implicated in a high-profile death.

Showtrial series two will take place in the aftermath of the killing of climate activist Marcus Calderwood in a hit-and-run. In his final moments, Marcus implicates a policeman in his murder.

Policeman Justin Mitchell (Chernobyl's Michael Socha) is subsequently dubbed "Officer X" in the media ahead of a fraught criminal trial trying to determine whether the climate activist's death was actually murder or a damning accident.

"Loved series one! I cannot wait to get into the shoes of a character with such depth and ambiguity," Michael has said of his role.

BAFTA TV Award-winning Sherwood actor Adeel Akhtar will be the defence attorney who looks to add this string of winning contentious cases, while Electric Dreams' Nathalie Armin is the CPS lawyer trying to put away "Officer X" for murder.

"I’m a big fan of Ben's writing and so excited to be given the opportunity to join the second series of a brilliant show," Adeel said.

Nathalie added: "I'm thrilled to be a part of this brilliant story. Leila is a fascinating role and I can't wait to bring her to life."

Filming on the new series of Showtrial is expected to begin in Belfast this November, with more cast members to be announced closer to the time.

"I am very grateful to the BBC for the opportunity to explore another sensational trial which I hope will be just as entertaining as our first outing," creator Ben Richards said.

"I love writing Showtrial, and I'm honoured to have a cast of such high quality to deliver it.”

The second series of Showtrial will air on BBC One and the BBC iPlayer, with a date to be confirmed in due course. The first series is available to stream now on the BBC iPlayer.
