Speculation is rife among Death in Paradise enthusiasts about who will step into Ralf Little's shoes as the series' protagonist, following his exit last month. The buzz has included names like Rupert Grint of Harry Potter fame and Martin Clunes from Doc Martin.

Yet, a hint dropped by Death in Paradise writer James Hall on social media has stirred fresh conjecture. Observant fans have picked up on Hall's recent follow of American actor Michael Rapaport on Twitter.

Rapaport boasts an impressive CV with appearances in Friends, Prison Break, My Name is Earl, Atypical, The 6th Day, and Doctor Dolittle 2, fuelling rumours that he might be the new detective gracing the sandy shores.

Bookmakers are currently favouring Rupert Grint to don the detective's hat, with odds at 6-4 for his succession. Despite this, the debate remains open with several candidates being championed by past Death in Paradise stars, reports the Express.

Ben Miller, who portrayed DI Richard Poole from 2011 to 2014, has thrown his support behind Toby Jones of Mr Bates vs The Post Office, while also voicing his enthusiasm for the potential of a female lead taking centre stage.

Miller expressed his thoughts to RadioTimes.com, saying: "Oh my God, there are so many people who'd be brilliant," and then proposed: "Toby Jones that's who I'd like to see."

However, Ben agreed that a woman carrying the mantle as head detective could definitely work for the show. Quoting him, he said: "I could see that, 100 percent. I think that'd be good too. If we're playing fantasy detectives, Miranda Hart."

Earlier this year, Ralf Little who played the character of Neville Parker in Death in Paradise made his exit from the series.

He released a statement confirming his leaving and showed much gratitude for the opportunity. He recollected: "My time on Saint Marie has come to an end what an end! ".

"New adventures await Neville, and he got to sail away into the sunset with his best friend. Who knows what happens for them next!"
