Gavin and Stacey fans feel they have 'worked out' the ending of Nessa and Smithy, following the announcement the BBC sitcom will return for a final episode this Christmas.

The beloved show, which aired for three seasons from 2007 to 2010, will see James Corden and Ruth Jones return to their roles. The pair delighted fans when they announced the news on social media on Friday in a cryptic post on Instagram.

Holding up a script across their faces, the duo wrote: "Some news… It’s official!!! We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey. See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James."

Viewers recall that the 2019 Christmas special left fans on a huge cliffhanger, as Ruth's character Nessa got down on one knee to propose to Smithy. But what happens next? Fans believe they will in fact get their happy ending, reports the Mirror.

One person wrote on social media: "My theory… Wedding happens… all happy and everything… final shot, Bryn gets wasted at the wedding reception and blurts out what happened whilst camping with Jason and it’s so hilarious that no one understands why it was kept secret."

It comes as the show was heavily tipped to return for another one-off over the festive period, with broadcasting giants BBC and Netflix locking horns in a bidding war for the episode.

However Ruth dismissed the speculation. She told RTE Radio 1: "All I can say is, if there was something to say on that front, James and I would happily announce it, we would. Apparently there’s a bidding war going on between the BBC and Netflix and I love it because it says, 'a source says', who is this source?”

Meanwhile, James cast doubt on the possibility of returning to helm the iconic show. He previously told Sky News: "I genuinely don’t know if we’ll ever do another one. I think Ruth [Jones] and I would love to make something together again… I really don’t know with Gavin & Stacey. I think we feel so proud of that last special…

"I think, in a way, those characters, they live on, they carry on, they’re still out there somewhere living and breathing. Their lives carry on and we just sort of get together and open this portal and find out. Some people say to me, ‘I want to know what happens’. And I go, so do I! I don’t know… Maybe there’s something really perfect about it ending there. Can we truly fulfill people’s ambitions for it? I know it’s such an annoying answer, I’m aware of that, but I don’t know."
