BBC Midlands Today presenter Nick Owen in tears as 'proud' son's words read out on air

Much-loved Midlands TV presenter Nick Owen was left in tears when a message from his son was read out on air. The long-serving BBC Midlands Today presenter was honoured with an MBE in the recent King’s Birthday Honours.

On Monday, several messages from wellwishers on social media were read out on air and correspondent Ben Godfrey surprised Nick by finishing the segment with a final message from his son Tim Owen, the BBC reports .

Nick said that the award was ‘overwhelming’ and the response had been ‘staggering’.

“I’m thrilled, I really am,” he added.

In his message, Tim simply said ‘very proud of you, dad’, leaving Nick in tears.

“My Tim, bless you,” he said. He added: “I do want to thank everyone who’s been in touch and [been] so supportive.”

Nick underwent treatment for prostate cancer last year and has spoken publicly about his experience, sparking a surge in men being tested for the disease.

He said: “I’m so grateful that people have responded to the message in the first place about prostate cancer because that’s such an important thing.”
