BBC responds to Love Island star's 'inappropriate' remark during sports coverage

The BBC has responded to Chris Hughes' 'inappropriate' remarks during his coverage of The Hundred cricket tournament on Wednesday (August 2).

The former Love Island contestant, who found fame on the reality dating show's third season in 2017, was conducting a BBC Two pitch-side interview with Australian all-rounder Maitlan Brown when the incident occurred.

During the exchange, Brown revealed that her Southern Brave team went to watch Greta Gerwig's Barbie movie as a team-bonding exercise ahead of the tournament.

"We watched Barbie the other night all together, and it was really good team-bonding and the group is gelling really well together," she explained.

Hughes then replied: "You’re a little Barbie yourself, aren’t you, with your blue eyes." After Brown laughed, Hughes added: "She’s blushing now."

Responding to the incident following some backlash from viewers on social media, a BBC spokesperson said: "We have spoken to Chris and explained that his comment was not appropriate."

It comes after Hughes' heated exchange with Made in Chelsea star Lucy Watson over her views on horse racing.

In June, Watson took to social media to condemn horse racing following the Royal Ascot, writing that "horses deserve better".

Hughes responded by saying that horses were "the best looked-after animal in the world" and "more would die in the wild than on the racecourse", to which Watson claimed that "approx 250 horses die every year on British racecourse".

Waston then shared a lengthy statement on social media saying that, while she used to own horses and compete with them, she has since learnt that they are "risking their lives at the races for the sake of entertainment".

Love Island airs on ITV2 and streams on ITVX.
