BBC's highest paid stars revealed

The BBC has published this year's list of its highest paid stars, with Gary Lineker now the only one earning more than £1m.

Lineker, 61, was paid between £1,350,000 and £1,354,999 for his work on Match of the Day, Sports Personality Of The Year, and other programmes.

He first topped the list in 2017/18, taking a voluntary pay cut of £10,000 in 2020 after pressure from female staff for greater pay parity.

Only three of the top 10 are women, with Zoe Ball in second for The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show on Radio 2, despite taking a pay cut.

News anchor Fiona Bruce came in sixth, having received a small pay cut on last year, and Vanessa Feltz featured eighth.

Radio 1 Breakfast DJ Greg James is the only new addition to the top 10, with a salary of between £390,000 and £394,000 - up £80,000 on last year.

Former footballer Alan Shearer has had year-on-year increases, putting him joint-third with Steve Wright, the corporation's annual report reveals.

Desert Island Discs and Radio 6 Music presenter Lauren Laverne falls just out the top 10 after her salary dropped by £15,000.

Norton absent amid string of departures

Graham Norton is absent from the list after leaving his Radio 2 show in December 2020 to go to Virgin Radio. He still fronts the BBC's Eurovision coverage among other things.

Broadcasters Emily Maitlis, Jon Sopel, Andrew Marr, and Dan Walker all feature in the top 30 but have now left the corporation.

There was a series of high-profile departures this year after Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries announced a freeze of the BBC licence fee under inflation for two years.

Mrs Dorries has also prompted criticism with her plans to privatise Channel 4.
