Lost Boys & Fairies stars Sion Daniel Young and Fra Fee have opened up about the 'bizarrely rare' queer drama.

The upcoming BBC series tells the story of a gay couple and their heartwarming journey to adoption. Young stars as "singer and artiste-extraordinaire" Gabriel, while Hawkeye star Fee plays his partner Andy.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, the actors explained how much it meant to tell the story of a queer couple trying to start a family — an arc that isn't often portrayed on screen.

"It was just that, it was really special, and I've known Daf [James], who wrote Lost Boys for quite, quite some time, so I've seen him have that journey," said Young.

"So to have it realised in such a beautiful way for TV was really special and I know Fra feels the same. We feel really lucky to get to be the two that are telling this story for sure."

Fee added: "I mean, it's bizarrely so rare to just see something that from a queer perspective, you know, about two men, for example, that is just so inherently joyful and so, so full of love, in the same way that every other relationship or familial setup is similarly full of love.

"So to get to tell that story was, yeah, I guess a real honour and just profoundly, profoundly joyful."

The show's cast also includes Sharon D Clarke (Red, White & Royal Blue), Elizabeth Berrington (Henpocalypse!), Maria Doyle Kennedy (Outlander) and Arwel Gruffydd (Tess of the d'Urbervilles).

Shaheen Jafargholi (Casualty), Mali Ann Rees, William Thomas (Torchwood), Gwyneth Keyworth and Gwawr Loader round out the cast.

Lost Boys & Fairies was created by Daf James, with Testament of Youth's James Kent on board to direct. James developed the series as part of the BBC's Writersroom programme in 2019.

"It means the world to me that this queer, Welsh, adoption story has found its home on BBC One," James said in a statement after the project was announced.

"It's a story I'm deeply passionate about and I can't overstate how indebted I am to Duck Soup Films and the BBC for empowering me to tell it authentically and without compromise."

Lost Boys & Fairies will premiere on Monday, June 3 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
