Beach Hoggers Face Fines As Police Wage War On Selfish Sunbathers

It’s a sight which makes holidaymakers’ blood boil.

They stroll down to the beach - only to find that the best spots have been reserved by people who are nowhere to be seen.

But cheeky sunbathers at one Spanish resort are now thinking twice before planting towels, umbrellas, tables and chairs on the sand and wandering off.

That’s after police on beaches near the Costa del Sol town of Torrox banned the practice of getting up at the crack of dawn to secure the best space.

And anyone caught flouting the law now faces up to €300 (£215) in fines, reports Diario Sur.

So far, local cops - who were originally handed the powers in 2014 - have opted for a softly-softly approach.

After spotting a suspect towel, they wait for several minutes.

If the owners don’t show up, they confiscate the materials which can be reclaimed for €30 (£21).

Some 30 people have coughed up the cash after being busted breaking the rule in 2015. Last year, 12 sunbathers fell foul of the law.
