Ben Waine scores twice in New Zealand semi-final success

Plymouth Argyle striker Ben Waine netted twice as New Zealand eased to a 5-0 victory over Tahiti in the semi-finals of the OFC (Oceania Football Confederation) Nations Cup in Port Vila, Vanuatu.

In doing so, the 23-year-old became the joint top scorer in the tournament on four goals, along with Fiji's Roy Krishna. Waine also struck twice in the All Whites' 3-0 group stage win against Solomon Islands.

Waine for Max Mata was the only change to New Zealand's starting line-up against Tahiti from their previous match, a 4-0 defeat of Vanuatu.

The Argyle forward put his country 2-0 up in the 45th minute with a close range shot high into the net after the ball was cut back inside to him by Kosta Barbarouses, and New Zealand then added a third goal in added time.

Waine made it 4-0 in the 53rd minute with a simple header from a central position after a cross from captain Liberato Cacace before Barbarouses grabbed his second goal of the game.

New Zealand will now be hot favourites to beat Vanuatu in the OFC Nations Cup final on Sunday. Vanuatu earned their place with a 2-1 win against Fiji.
