A self-proclaimed counter-culture street food venue has taken home the title of the best burger in the North East - and its winning burger will feature in a new food box this weekend.

The Scranners Arms in Ouseburn, Newcastle, defended its top spot in The Battle of the Burger for the second year on March 29.

At the event, which attracted over 15,000 hungry foodies, the team whipped up over 3,000 burgers and broke all records for the most burgers sold during the event.

This averaged around 2.6 burgers prepared, cooked and sold per minute during the two-day gathering at Exhibition Park.

The winning burger was named 'The Radgie Burger', and features flavours that "pack a punch" including peppers, onions and chillies which were re-packaged into slider size for the event.

Commenting on the win, Co-Director and Head Chef, Stuart Hann, said: "We’re all about creating banging food for any event, on a mission to innovate with big food and big flavours, to create mouth-raving memories.

"Whether that’s serving up our special scran at pub restaurants, events, festivals or special occasions, we literally love nothing better than seeing our customers enjoying our street food menus inspired by counter-culture and an alternative twist on traditional dishes.

"Winning The Battle of The Burger for the second time in a row is absolutely banging! We snuck in there and beat our own record from last year by just one, but who’s counting when you emerge victorious for the second year in a row?

"In all fairness, it’s a cracking competition with great camaraderie between the different vendors and we’re looking forward to defending our title again next year. Let’s see if we can make it a hat trick!"

Their winning burger will now be added to a brand new bait-box which is set to debut at another festival this month which will also include salt and chilli chicken fries, pork belly bites and wings with sesame, spring onions, hoisin, sriracha and curry sauce.

Darren Goodwin, Co-Director and Business Manager of The Scranners Arms, said: "Over the years we’ve cooked up some bangers from our spot in The Tanners, but the party doesn’t end there.

"We like to get out and about, bringing new mad flavours to the world beyond our own four walls. Our team is top-notch and no one does it better when it comes to cooking up exciting food that knocks your socks off.
