Big Bang Theory is set to see another spin-off, currently in the works at HBO Max.

Following in the footsteps of Young Sheldon, show creator Chuck Lorre has announced he is in the early stages of developing another series in the franchise.

The news was announced during a presentation at Warner Bros. Discovery's press day, with it being revealed that the new project would stream on Max, the company's new platform bringing together HBO Max and Discovery+.

Plot and cast details are currently under wraps, though Variety reports the new series will have a fresh cast with the potential for previous Big Bang stars to appear.

Lorre created The Big Bang Theory alongside Bill Prady, who both served as executive producers on the popular comedy show.

Airing from 2007 to 2019, the show told the story of four socially awkward friends who are forced to learn more about life outside the laboratory when a free-spirited woman enters their lives.

The show featured a star-studded cast, including Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons and Kaley Cuoco, alongside Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, Melissa Rauch, Mayim Bialik and Kevin Sussman.

It achieved runaway success, spawning spin-off series Young Sheldon in 2017 that follows the young life of Sheldon Cooper from the original series. Filming recently wrapped on the seventh series of the spin-off, with the show's star Raegan Revord giving fans a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes action in a selection of shots.

The star captioned the social media post: "That's a wrap on season 6. Even after all this time I can't believe I get to be a part of this incredible show surrounded by the most loving and supportive cast and crew! See you this summer for season 7!"

Producer Steve Holland has teased that the seventh series of the show could be its last in sad news for fans.

"We've certainly started to talk about it," he told TVLine. "When you're in the middle of a season, it's such a grind that we haven't had too many in-depth conversations. But now, as we're getting to the end [of season 6], we've started to talk about it more.

"There are certainly [plot points] we know we want to hit next season, and there are certain things where, if it's the end versus if it's just [another season], those things might be different. It's not my decision to make."
