The Big Sick: Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V Gordon on writing the year's most charming comedy

If you're yet to hear about new romantic comedy The Big Sick, the chances are you will very soon.

After a breakout success in the US - which has seen it earn the feat of becoming the fifth highest grossing independent film of the year since its release in June - the comedy finally lands in UK cinemas this weekend.

The critically-acclaimed film, directed by Michael Showalter, is written by husband and wife duo Kumail Nanjiani (of Silicon Valley fame) and Emily V Gordon.

Loosely based on their real-life courtship, the film - which boasts an impressive cast including Sissy Spacek, Ray Romano and Adeel Akhtar - follows Pakistani comic Kumail (played by Nanjiani) and Emily (Zoe Kazan) who must contend with cultural differences as their relationship intensifies.

The Independent spoke with Nanjiani and Gordon about the film's runaway success, why it's the year's greatest date movie and whether we could catch up with them in a future film.

The Big Sick is released in cinemas Friday (28 July).
