Paxton was working on the follow-up to the 2001 Oscar-winning film of the same name prior to his death and the series had only aired four episodes from the show's order.

The further nine episodes will continue to air on the network.

CBS released a statement expressing their sadness at the news and condolences to the actor's family.

"Television will also remember a guy who lit up every room with infectious charm, energy and warmth, and as a great storyteller who loved to share entertaining anecdotes and stories about his work."

Tributes have also been flooding in from other Hollywood stars. Tom Hanks, who starred in Apollo 13 and the upcoming The Circle with Paxton, called him "simply, a wonderful man".

Titanic director, James Cameron, also payed tribute to his friend and colleague of nearly 40 years, saying they met on a low-budget film set.

He said: "What followed was 36 years of making films together, helping develop each other's projects, going on scuba diving trips together, watching each other's kids growing up, even diving the Titanic wreck together in Russian subs.

"It was a friendship of laughter, adventure, love of cinema, and mutual respect."
