Music lovers who visited a Watford cinema one Valentine’s Day in the 1960s watched a performance from a band who would go on to become one of the biggest all-time.
Last week, we shared a picture of the Rolling Stones that was taken by a Watford Observer photographer on October 6, 1964 – the date when the group performed at the Gaumont for one of the last gigs of their fourth British tour.
Some more digging through our picture archive has unearthed another wonderful snap taken earlier that year on February 14, capturing Mick Jagger, Bill Wyman and the late Brian Jones and Charlie Watts on stage at the high street cinema.

This was during the Rolling Stones’ second UK tour of 1964 – they had six concert tours in total that year including two in America – and an online search suggests they played two shows at the Gaumont on February 14, the first consisting of three songs: Not Fade Away, I Wanna Be Your Man and You Better Move On.
However, the Stones were not the only band to perform at the Gaumont that day.

The event is listed as the ‘Gaumont Rock Show’ in the diary of our photographer, who also captured two other groups on stage.
