Black Rhinoceros Undergoes CT Scan at Chicago's Brookfield Zoo

A 2,300-pound eastern black rhinoceros called Layla underwent a portable CT scan at Chicago’s Brookfield Zoo on April 19 so veterinarians could determine the next steps in treating her for a “life-threatening nasal blockage,” the zoo said.

According to a statement from the zoo, nearly 40 staff, plus technicians from Sound Technologies and NeuroLogica, took part in the process of moving the seven-year-old rhino to and from the scanning machine. An excavator and forklift also were used to help transport Layla.

This footage shows Layla being moved inside the portable CT scan machine, donated by Samsung NeuroLogica. The last few seconds of the video show Layla back in her habitat the following day.
