Why do other planets’ moons have cool names but ours is just called ‘the moon’?

Have you ever thought about how boring and uninspired the name “Moon” for a moon is?

Well, maybe not, but this campaign based in Utah sure has.

After Tad Henderson’s daughter asked him if he thought it was dumb that the moon was named “Moon” while driving home one night, he agreed, reports the Salt Lake Tribune.

Because, after all, moons of other planets have cool names like “Europa,” or “Phobos,” or “Titan.” A moon named “Moon” is comparable to a dog named “Dog” or a person named “Person.”

With that in mind, Henderson began to lead an online campaign to get the Earth’s moon a fancy new name. The campaign is called “Name the Moon” and is asking netizens to sign a position to get the moon’s name changed.

It also asks what readers would like to see the name changed to, and so far over 2,600 suggestions (and petition signs) have been submitted.

The group then launched an animated series to teach people about our solar system, while being “entertaining, educating and engaging” called ‘Looney Moonies’.

In their second episode, moons of the galaxy gather to think of a new name for the Earth’s moon. After being unable to find a name that they all agree on, the moons decide that it’s better to delegate the responsibility to the people of Earth.

“We’re really trying to reach people’s imaginations and connect with people, especially kids,” Henderson told the Salt Lake Tribune.

And although they need our help, the decision is ultimately up to the International Astronomical Union (IAU).

“It’s actually kind of funny. We’re really scratching something that they believe we shouldn’t be,” he said, admitting that the campaign has gotten pushback from some astronomers associated with IAU.

“But, you know, the moon is ours, it’s not theirs.”
