Body of Female Skier Recovered at Mount Rainier National Park 1 Month After She Disappeared

The body was recovered from the bottom of a waterfall in the Washington National Park on Saturday, June 8 after she was reported missing on May 19

The body of a female skier has been found at Mount Rainier National Park.

On Tuesday, June 11, Mount Rainier officials revealed in a press release that the body had been recovered from the bottom of a waterfall in the Washington National Park on Saturday, June 8 after the skier went missing in May.

“A team of park rangers recovered the body of a deceased female skier from the base of Pebble Creek’s Moraine Falls above Paradise at Mount Rainier National Park on June 8,” the release read. “Park rangers initiated a search May 19 in response to a report of an overdue skier. The skier was last heard from May 18, before setting out to ski tour above Paradise.”

The National Park Service added that rangers and volunteers searched for the skier — whose name has not been shared — by looking for tracks over places such as Deadhorse Creek Basin, Panorama Face and Alta Vista.

The Nisqually and Paradise glaciers were also searched, as well as the Muir Snowfield, Pebble Creek, Panorama Point and the Nisqually drainage.

Meanwhile, the woman was found unresponsive by the park's contract helicopter during a reconnaissance flight.

Officials say she appeared to “have fallen approximately 200 feet to the base of a waterfall.”

Recovery teams were initially unable to recover the body due to high-risk hazards caused by the “unstable snow moat” surrounding the area.

However, “another period of favorable weather” enabled the rangers to recover the body “using traditional crevasse rescue methods.”

According to USA Today, the methods consisted of a rope being used to lower rescuers down to the body.

The deceased skier was then taken by the Pierce County Medical Examiner to Kautz Creek Helibase where her exact cause of death will be determined.

This marks the second death at Mount Rainier to be reported in June. Earlier this month, PEOPLE reported on the death of Brian Harper who died after collapsing during a guided tour from licensed guide service Alpine Ascents International.

CPR on the 41-year-old was unsuccessful and a pulse could not be detected.
