Bomb squad carry out controlled explosion of suspected hazardous substance on beach
A bomb squad carried out a controlled explosion on Seaton Carew beach after bottles of a suspected hazardous substance were seized as part of a police probe.
Officers called the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) just before 2pm on Saturday after the mysterious substance was identified inside three bottles at Hartlepool Police Station. The bottles had been seized as evidence as part of an ongoing investigation, Cleveland Police said.
The EOD teams attended the police station as a precaution to collect the bottles and safely transported them to the beach at Seaton Carew, where they carried out a "safe and controlled" explosion. The force said there was no requirement for the station to be evacuated - and thanked people for their "patience and cooperation" while the substance was disposed of.
