Bomb disposal units descended on a residential street in Bury after a suspected grenade was found on Sunday morning (June 30).

Police, fire crews and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit (EOD) attended the incident on Rivington Drive at around 11.15am after the device was uncovered.

A 100m cordon was put in place in the surrounding area as specialist crews worked at the scene. It's understood a 'controlled explosion' was carried out on the device after it had been safely removed from the scene.

A witness told the Manchester Evening News that roads surrounding the Seddons Farm estate were 'blocked' by emergency services. They said: "[There are] multiple fire engines, ambulances and cordons and roads blocked. Multiple police cars are blocking roads and at least five fire engines near the primary school."

Greater Manchester Police later confirmed they had been called to reports of a suspected grenade being found, with the area taped off 'for the safety of the community' as crews worked at the scene. Further details have not yet been confirmed.

A GMP spokesperson said: "We are currently responding to an incident on Rivington Drive in Bury where a suspected grenade has been found. Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) are in attendance with a 100m cordon in place to ensure the safety of the community."

A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service added: "Shortly after 11.15am today (Sunday, 30 June), two fire engines from Whitefield and Bolton North fire stations, and the Technical Response Unit from Ashton-under-Lyne Community Fire Station, were called to attend an incident on Rivington Drive, Bury.

“Crews arrived quickly and are working alongside colleagues from Greater Manchester Police to make the area safe."
