First he gave the capital Boris bikes, now we can look forward to an all-electric double-decker Boris bus – set to make its debut on London streets in October.

The low-emission technology will go on trial between Cricklewood and Victoria Station (route 16).

“The iconic red double-decker bus is about to become greener than ever," said Mayor Boris Johnson, who was speaking at the Clean Bus Summit in London's City Hall.

London’s first pure electric route will be the 312 single decker route between Norwood and South Croydon, he added.

The city’s transport commissioner Sir Peter Hendy said: "The introduction of new electric buses and further developments like induction charging at termini for hybrid bus batteries will significantly improve air quality and provide our passengers with quieter and smoother journeys later this year."
