Boris Johnson Brexit news LIVE: EU rejects PM's latest call to scrap the backstop

EU leaders have rejected Boris Johnson's latest call to remove Irish backstop from the Brexit withdrawal agreement.

In a letter sent yesterday, the PM blasted the proposal as "anti-democratic" as he told EU Council President Donald Tusk it was untenable.

Mr Tusk tweeted today stating that: "Those against the backstop and not proposing realistic alternatives in fact support reestablishing a border."

The EU has since called on Britain to make "concrete proposals" which work with the withdrawal agreement in order to beak the deadlock.
