Boy, 15, suffers facial injuries in 'disorder' at Salisbury v Basingstoke match

A 15-YEAR-OLD boy suffered a facial injury after a disorder incident in the stands at a football match between Salisbury and Basingstoke Town.

The incident happened at around 4.15pm in the Ray Mac Stadium on Monday, April 1.

The boy required treatment for his injuries. No arrests were made and police say they are continuing to make enquiries.

A statement from Wiltshire Police reads: "At around 4.15pm yesterday, April 1, we received a report of a disorder at the football match between Salisbury and Basingstoke Town.

"A 15-year-old boy suffered a facial injury which required treatment.

"No arrests have been made and our enquiries are ongoing."

Manager Brian Dutton said the incident wasn't ideal but said it was a one-off and hoped the club learned from it and ensured nothing like it happens again.

Amanda Newbery, one of the directors of the club, added: "We had a record attendance for our important bank holiday match at the weekend.  Basingstoke brought a good number of travelling fans who were mostly good-natured.

"A small group of them, while celebrating their goal, came into contact with the home supporters where one of our young fans sustained an injury which was dealt with by the first aiders on duty at the match.

"Police officers from Salisbury attended and gave the away fans some help with their return transport to the railway station."

The match ended 2-1 to Salisbury FC after two goals from captain Noah Coppin, including one from the penalty spot.

Stefan Brown scored the visitor's only goal.

Salisbury also played on Good Friday and drew 3-3 with Swindon Supermarine. The Whites are third in the Southern League Premier South and pushing for a play-off place after Chesham United were confirmed league champions over the weekend.
