Boy taken to hospital after he 'became unwell' from 'using vape' at school

A boy was taken to hospital when he “became unwell” after using a vape at school. An ambulance was called to Humphrey Perkins School, in Barrow Upon Soar, near Loughborough, “immediately” after the incident, a spokesperson said.

East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) said it received the call at 10.47am on Wednesday (June 19), and that one patient was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary. The school's head praised the “rapid actions” of staff, and said that students attended an assembly to “remind them about this very important topic”.

Della Bartram, associate principal of Humphrey Perkins, said a “school investigation" was under way. She said: "A student became unwell during the school day and an ambulance was immediately called.

“A school investigation is underway, but early indication has led us to believe that the student had used a vape. The school community behaved with respect and kindness, giving the student and Ambulance Service privacy, and thanks to the rapid actions of our staff, the unwell student received the care they needed.

“Humphrey Perkins school takes a zero tolerance approach to vapes and vaping and has a robust curriculum of lessons and assemblies, alongside wider pastoral care, to educate our young people about the potential dangers. Following this isolated incident, all students attended an assembly to remind them about this very important topic."

A spokesperson for EMAS said: “We received a call at 10.47am on 19 June to The Humphrey Perkins School in Barrow upon Soar. The caller reported a medical emergency. We sent a crewed ambulance, and one patient was taken to Leicester Royal Infirmary.” A spokesperson for Humphrey Perkins said the boy has since been released from hospital.
