Brandon Jacobs knows what it takes to win a Super Bowl. He was the starting running back for the Giants teams that won Super Bowls XLII and XLVI.

When Jacobs says he believes the 2017 Giants have what it takes to win Super Bowl LII, it’s a prognostication not to be taken lightly.

“They’ve damn sure got the players to do it,” Jacobs said in an interview with NJ Advance Media. “The coaches are there. Last year they didn’t have anywhere near what they have now. I think they’ve got a good opportunity to go make some noise in the postseason next year.”

Jacobs is fourth on the Giants’ all-time leading rushers list behind Tiki Barber, Rodney Hampton, and Joe Morris. He accumulated 5,087 yards on 1,136 attempts with 73 touchdowns in eight seasons for Big Blue.

Jacobs is naturally interested in the Giants’ ground attack being a former running back himself. The Giants ranked 29th in rushing in 2016 with a measly 88.3 yards per game but a pedestrian running attack is not indicative of postseason success.

The Giants had the worst run game in the league (89.2 yards) when they won Super Bowl XLVI. At the same time, the Giants ranked fourth on the ground when they won Super Bowl XLII.

“It was definitely tough to watch the run game last year,” Jacobs, who rushed for 1,009 yards when the Giants won Super Bowl XLII, said. “Gee, they were bad, man. I’ll be honest, the passing game was there. (Odell) Beckham (Jr.) and (Sterling) Shepard and them boys did really good last year. Will Tye did pretty well.

“I’m just hoping that we can get the running game on board and mix it up with the great passing game that we’ll have on offense and maybe we can go beat somebody’s ass next season.”

Jacobs has gotten to know safety Landon Collins. The two will host a softball game in Ponoma, N.J. Friday featuring 70 past current and Giants. Proceeds from the game will benefit the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund.

Jacobs says there is a bond between Giants players of different eras.

“We’ve all got the same interest, which is the Giants,” Jacobs said. “We’re pushing and rooting for them and hoping that this year can be the year that they can put some of those pieces together and take this thing all the way.”
