There was once a time when Breaking Bad's success actually wasn't a sure thing.

That's because in the earlier seasons, AMC's crystal meth masterpiece wasn't available via streaming – which is where a great portion of its target audience would spend their time.

Add to that the fact the main character was a terminally-ill, ruthless drug kingpin, and you'll understand why the Breaking Bad cast weren't always convinced that the show would "catch hold" with TV lovers.

Kicking back on Graham Norton's BBC Radio 2 show today (June 22), Skyler White actress Anna Gunn was asked if she had any inclination as to how big the series would get.

"No. I didn't. I knew how amazing it was – that pilot script alone, as a standalone script… brilliant. I knew that," she replied.

"We all wondered how that particular story, if it would catch hold, and if people would dig into it the way they did.

"And they did, but not really until it started streaming, around the third season. People still wondered where AMC was on their TVs."

She continued: "We knew what we were doing and we loved the work, and then it just [took off] like a rocket ship when it started streaming. And then that was very sudden and a bit shocking as well."
