Bristol City player ratings vs Huddersfield Town: Tanner deserves credit as Wells salvages point

Max O’Leary - 6

His kicking was a little haywire in the first half as Huddersfield did all they could to pressure him but he regained a bit more composure after the break where he was called upon to make a strong save to deny Sorba Thomas. Could do little with Josh Koroma’s goal as he blasted in from close range.

Ross McCrorie - 6

There was real purpose to his play when he looked to drive forward but as the right-sided centre-back that had to be tempered and it sucked a lot of his attributes as a result. Defensively he was fine 1vs1, offering plenty of strength but there were a few rash decisions in trying to meet the ball which left his teammates a little exposed at times.

George Tanner - 7

The goal was an obvious blot on his copybook but Tanner deserves huge credit for stepping in and anchoring the Robins defence against the imposing physical presence of Delano Burgzorg. The defender was given an early scare when he was outmuscled down the side but after that he held his position well and defended his box with authority.

Haydon Roberts - 7

There were a few ropey moments as a few clearances went astray while Thomas did a good job in cutting off the supply line to Pring on his outside, while he also struggled to contain the Welsh winger at times. But there was no questioning his class on the ball in moving the Robins up the pitch and it was his calmness to hold onto the ball in the dying moments and slot Pring on the overlap.

Mark Sykes - 6

He endured a first-half in which everything that could go wrong, did, with poor touches and a constant wish to go backwards whenever he was fed the ball, taking momentum out of the attacks City were trying to mount. He improved after the break, however, and was a constant threat down the right, albeit without making full use of the chances and space he fashioned.

Matty James - 6

The game passed him by a little as the second balls weren’t quite jumped on and he, like a lot of his teammates, didn’t quite have their passing radar fully tuned but the veteran was more controlled as the game developed and ensured the game was played as much as it could be in the visitors’ half.

Joe Williams - 6

Probably the pick of the City midfield when he went off with how he got about the pitch but the passing wasn’t quite on point, something that was apparent throughout the Robins team. Was taken off with 20 minutes to go as Manning introduced Mehmeti to try and create something.

Cam Pring - 6

Tried to offer an outlet and made some incisive runs off the ball but either the pass wasn’t quite forthcoming or he wasn’t seen at all. Like most of his teammates, he was more involved in attacking sense after the break but couldn’t make enough happen with a couple of charged down shots and crosses. The Huddersfield goal may have originated from his side of the field but he made amends with the run and cross that led to City’s penalty.

Jason Knight - 6

With the reshuffled to the line-up in light of Zak Vyner’s injury and the desire to field Matty James and Joe Williams meant the Irishman was restored to the advanced playmaker role. Once again it bore mixed results, as he struggled to find openings in the first half but then had the Robins increasingly on the move in the second before returning to central midfield when Anis Mehmeti was introduced.

Scott Twine - 6

It’s games like this, devoid of quality and lacking any discernible rhythm and flow that need players of the ingenuity and quality of Twine to step up and make some magic happen. There were some fleeting moments, some sharp 1-2s on the edge of the area and moves into space but they were all too irregular.

Tommy Conway - 6

A first-half of little involvement, outside of a few hairy moments for Lee Nicholls as he chased down some back-passes and a boot to the face courtesy of Michal Helik, turned into a positive first 20 minutes of the second period as Conway looked to attack the space more, and stretched the Terriers defence before he was replaced by Nahki Wells.

Substitutes

Nahki Wells (for Conway, 66) - 7

Of all the people to break Huddersfield hearts it was their promotion hero of 2017 as he scored his fourth goal in as many games.

Anis Mehmeti (for Williams, 71) - 6

As Huddersfield retreated to the edge of their box to close the space the Albanian couldn’t conjure anything of note but did add a certain spark that had been missing prior to his apparance.
