Bristol University cleaner enjoys holiday to Jamaica paid for by student crowdfunding

A cleaner says he feels like a "trillionaire" as he enjoys a luxurious Jamaican holiday paid for by students at the university where he works.

Some 230 students at Bristol University crowdfunded more than £1,500 so Herman Gordon could return to his home country and visit his family for the first time in a decade.

When he was surprised with the money in June, Mr Gordon was given a letter which thanked him for "all the positive energy you have given to us throughout the years".

Mr Gordon, who works in one of the university's libraries, is now in Jamaica with his wife Denise and has stayed at a five-star resort in Montego Bay, courtesy of Sandals Resorts.

In a tribute to the generous students, he said: "God bless you all. Everybody will see this and think that I'm a trillionaire."

During their two-night stay in Montego Bay, Mr Gordon and his wife sipped champagne, dined on the beach and enjoyed a boat tour.

They will go on to visit family in Kingston.

Footage of Mr Gordon breaking down in tears when he was given the money for the trip went viral, as students described the cleaner as "the epitome of happiness".

Others said he was "the jolliest man I have ever met", adding: "If you want a reason to smile, go talk to him for a minute or two."

Through tears, Mr Gordon thanked students and said: "When you see things like this you know that somebody loves you. God bless you all."

Details of the Gordons' trip were shared on the Bristruths Facebook page, where the idea to help Mr Gordon was first generated back in May.

"Bistruths would like to thank all the Bristol students who made this possible," the group said in a post.

"We're delighted to say that Herman loved his holiday at a five-star resort in Jamaica along with this wife Denise."
