Brit Awards 2017 winners: Little Mix win first ever award as David Bowie scoops top prizes
Little Mix and David Bowie were the big winners at this year’s Brit Awards.
The chart-topping British girl group screamed as they rushed up on to the stage to collect their first ever Brit award for Best Single during Wednesday night’s ceremony.
“We honestly didn’t know where to go, we didn't think we’d win it,” said Jade Thirlwall. “We were just sitting there chin-wagging. This is for all our exes.”
David Bowie, who died after a battle with cancer last year, won a posthumous award for Best British Solo Male Artist as well as collecting the top accolade of Best Album for Blackstar.
Bowie’s son Duncan Jones accepted the award, telling the crowd: “I lost my dad last year but I also became a dad.”
Speaking about his father, he said: “He’s always been there supporting people who are a little bit weird, a little bit strange, a little bit different. This award is for all the kooks, and the people who make the kooks."
Lazarus star Michael C Hall collected Bowie’s Solo Male Artist prize, joking: “If David Bowie could be here tonight, he wouldn’t be here tonight.”
Emeli Sandé beat Ellie Goulding, Lianna La Havas, Anohni and Nao to be crowned Best British Female Solo artist, taking her sister up on stage with her.
The 1975 were named Best British Band, seeing off competition from the likes of Radiohead and Bastille.
“At the moment a lot of people in pop music and the public in general are told to ‘stay in your lane’ but if you have a platform don’t do that, please don’t do that,” frontman Matt Healy said on stage.

“This is mental, we’ve been the same line up since we were 13-years-old, so this kind of thing doesn’t really happen.”
Liam Payne was the only member of One Direction on hand to pick up the Best Video Award, sharing a rather awkward encounter with Simon Cowell on stage.
After his brief speech, Cowell jumped in to tell him to thank video director Ben Winston.
Robbie Williams closed the show after picking up the Icon Award, while other performances included an Ed Sheeran and Stormzy duet and Chris Martin's tribute to the late George Michael.
