There really is a north/south divide - at least when it comes to the weather.

While flooding hits parts of Yorkshire and warnings remain in place for neighbouring Lancashire, the south east is preparing for temperatures as high as 30 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday.

‘There is a front that will be straddling the UK and temperatures to the south east of that front will be much warmer,’ said Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge.

‘The next few days in the south east and the home counties are going to be very warm - but it is a different picture a bit further north - that is where the front will have an impact.

‘It is a boundary between two weather systems - we have got cooler air to the north and west, and warmer air to the south and east.’

Pictures have already emerged of water gushing out onto roads from White Scar Caves in Ingleton, North Yorkshire.

So far, the Environment Agency has put 14 flood warnings and 19 flood alerts in place this week across the north west.

And flood defence schemes have been activated to protect some 500 houses in Lancashire and Cumbria.

The Met Office added that temperatures will soar in the south east and East Anglia on Wednesday and Thursday as the south gets some late summer sun.

The mercury will hit the low 30s on those days, say forecasters.
