Britain has voted to leave the European Union in a historic referendum.

The final polls as voting closed on 23 June predicted a win for Remain. But the Leave campaign started to pull ahead in the early hours of Friday morning, and a strong pro-EU performance in London was unable to pull it back for the In camp.

Leave outperformed expectations early on, winning areas in the North East of England with significant margins.

The Out camp continued to take scalps in Wales and England, pulling in bigger number of votes than polls predicted.

London was staunchly in support of Remain, but the victories were not enough to save the result for Vote In.

The outcome has set the country on an uncertain path, and catapulted World financial markets into turmoil.
