A British company claims that it might have found the remains of Atlantis, the legendary city supposedly lost beneath the waves thousands of years ago.

Merlin Burrows, a British firm of satellite experts say they have spotted remnants which match the descriptions written by Greek philosopher Plato 2,400 years ago.

The ruin is in the Doñana National Park in Spain – and the firm claims that traces of ‘concrete’ at the site hint it could be 10-12,000 years old, the time when Atlantis is supposed to have existed.

The lost city is supposed to have possessed advanced technology, but been lost beneath the sea.

Bruce Blackburn of satellite firm Merlin Burrows said this week, ‘We’ve got a body of evidence that we’ve presented, and we have a whole host of proof points, and we’re quite happy for people to take a viewpoint.’

Blackburn says, ‘We’ve released the information, we’ve got some films, and we accept that there will be people who think, “What a load of rubbish.”’

The firm used satellite data from Landsat and ancient records including Plato to pinpoint a spot

The firm say that what they’ve observed matches up to descriptions in Plato’s dialogues, and that what appears to be ‘concrete’ at the site is 10,000 years old.

The team found what may be the remains of bases of ancient towers, and the ruins of a huge temple – which they claim match details in Plato.

The team also say that the details match descriptions in other ancient texts.

Others are more sceptical.

Speaking to LiveScience, Professor Ken Feder, of Central Connecticut State University said, ‘Here’s my problem: As an archaeologist, I know that I always need to be in the company of my bullshit detector. And these guys, they have done just about everything they possibly can to set off my bullshit detector.
