British Gas issues new £55 message to millions of customers

British Gas has issued a message to millions of its customers about how they could potentially save money on their energy bills. The energy giant says households will pay less than the new April price cap by switching to its fixed tariff.

The price cap was lowered at the start of April, meaning the average household will now pay less for their energy bills. The cap is now £1,690, a drop of £238 a year.

But British Gas says customers could pay £55 less than this through its fixed tariff. They added households can switch for free if a cheaper tariff becomes available.

The company said: "Pick our new, cheaper fixed tariff, and save an average of £55 vs. April’s price cap. Plus, if we roll out an even better-fixed tariff down the line, you can switch for free."

Customers on a fixed tariff will continue to pay that price for the length of their contract or until they switch so it's always worth considering what is the best option. Those on variable tariffs see their prices change depending on the price cap, usage and other factors.

British Gas added: "Compare our energy tariffs. Energy tariffs are the set rates you pay to us for gas, electricity, or both.

"They come in two basic types: fixed or variable. Which type of tariff best suits your home depends on. How much certainty you want over the price you pay. How often you want to switch supplier or change tariff."
