A British hiker has been found dead in the Spanish Pyrenees four days after he disappeared on a walk.

The man, 70, who was from London, was discovered in the mountain range by a rescue team on Thursday at around 1pm.

He went missing after going for a walk on Monday.

The Guardia Civil were informed of his disappearance by Interpol Manchester, which transferred over coordinates sent by his electronic watch.

The force believes the man had been hiking between the Lizara and Candanchú refuge when he got into trouble.

The Guardia Civil’s Greim unit, a specialist mountain rescue team, retraced his route by foot and searches were also conducted by helicopter.

A French rescue team also searched an adjacent mountain area in France on foot and by helicopter.

The man’s body was eventually found by three members of the Greim unit, who were searching on foot.

The victim, who has not been named, was found close to the Aspe Peak, a mountain in the western Pyrenees of Huesca.

The discovery comes at the same time that Spanish police are searching for another missing Briton, Jay Slater.

The 19-year-old went missing in Tenerife on June 17 after calling a friend between 8.30am and 9am to say he was lost and desperately thirsty.

His phone was last traced to the Rural de Teno national park in the north of the island.

For the last 12 days, the Guardia Civil has led a search operation involving helicopters, drones and sniffer dogs, but without success.

The force has now called for volunteers to join a “massive search” for him on Saturday.

Another British hiker was rescued last Friday in the same national park in Tenerife after failing to return to the start of his hike after several hours.

But David Larkin, 51, told the MailOnline that he was “embarrassed” and “didn’t need saving”.
