A British man has been killed and another injured following a suspected deliberate hit-and-run in Cyprus.

Police said that the two tourists were hit by a car while walking along a road near Paphos at around 2.30am on Sunday.

The older man, named locally as 39-year-old Charlie Birch from Powys, Wales, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The second man, aged 32, was taken to hospital and has non-life threatening injuries.

Police in Cyprus said a 35-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman are facing charges of premeditated murder.

A court in Paphos extended their detention for eight days.

According to Cyprus Mail, the two suspects and tourists were involved in an altercation at a bar.

The car believed to have been involved in the incident was later found dumped at the Ayios Georghios harbour and was removed by the fire service.

A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: "We are offering advice and support to the family of a British man following his death in Cyprus, and are in contact with the Cypriot authorities."#
