Tao Geoghegan Hart has been forced to abandon the Giro d’Italia following a crash on Stage 13.

The Briton, who had a free role at Team Ineos after Egan Bernal broke his collarbone a week before the race began, had made it into the day’s breakaway and was hoping to make up some ground in the general classification on the first summit finish of the race.

The Hackney-born rider had managed to infiltrate a strong-looking break along with Irish team mate Eddie Dunbar.

Geoghegan Hart, 24, had headed into Friday’s stage lying in 33rd position in the general classification following a crash earlier in the race. He was almost eight minutes down on race favourite Primoz Roglic [Jumbo-Visma] but banking useful experience in only his second grand tour.

Team Ineos said that Geoghegan Hart’s injuries were not too serious. A full medical report will be issued later on Friday.
