Brits' biggest career queries answered

With over half (55%) of UK workers considering applying for a new job in the next 12 months, research has revealed what what queries Brits have when it comes to landing their dream job.

Job search engine Adzuna has answered the five most-searched career questions, beginning with “How do I become a”, to ensure job hunters know how to land their dream role.

1. How do I become a paramedic (6,550 searches in the past 12 months)

Paramedics provide an immediate response to emergency 999 and 111 calls and the level of care provided can range from dealing with minor illnesses and injuries to life-threatening conditions.

To become one you must be registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC). To register, you can either get a degree or apply for a position within an ambulance trust as a student paramedic and study while you work. Each course will differ so check their requirements as some course providers require you to pass a fitness test, while for others, you'll need a full UK manual driving licence with C1 status.

There are currently 1,833 paramedic jobs available in the UK.

2. How do I become a nurse? (3,290 searches in the last 12 months)

The second most searched question, nurses are qualified medical experts who work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to deliver clinical treatment and care for patients. According to UCAS3, nursing is the UK’s most employable type of degree, with 94% of students getting a job within six months of finishing their course.

Most people qualify by studying a nursing degree, however, the standards for nursing degree apprenticeships have been recently updated to provide a more flexible route.

Within the NHS there are currently 764 nursing jobs available in the UK.

3. How do I become a midwife? (2,680 searches in the last 12 months)

A midwife supports pregnant women and their babies before, during and after childbirth. There are different routes you can take to get into midwifery; a university degree, an apprenticeship or through a specialist course run by a professional body.

Although there is currently a national shortage of midwives, the competition for course places is tough with 1,000 applicants for 30 places. Therefore, you need to have excellent qualifications and appropriate experience in a maternity unit or health/social care setting.

There are currently 2,069 midwifery jobs available in the UK.

4. How do I become a social worker? (2,570 searches in the last 12 months)

The role of a social worker is to support people to make positive changes in their lives. Although social work is a graduate profession, there are still flexible routes into the industry.

Firstly, if your degree isn’t in social work, you can go on to study a masters degree in social work. If you'd prefer a more hands-on approach, there are a number of fast-track training programmes on offer to graduates of any discipline, such as the government's Step Up to Social Work programme and Frontline programme.

There is also a relatively new social work degree apprenticeship which takes 36 months. On completion, apprentices gain an Honours degree in Social Work, enabling them to register with Social Work England, the new regulator for social workers.

There are currently 7,026 social worker vacancies available in the UK.

5. How do I become an Uber driver? (2,360 searches in the last 12 months)

We’ve all needed an Uber at some point, but one of the most searched career-specific questions is how to become one of their drivers. And the answer is very simple.

Firstly, you just need to sign up on their website. Once signed up you’ll need to obtain a private hire licence from a council that Uber is licensed by - if you are unsure of this step, Uber can help. You’ll then need to upload relevant documents, such as a UK drivers licence, get a vehicle and finally activate your account.

There are currently 2,985 Uber driving jobs available in the UK.
