Incredible images show the devastating effect the UK's longest heatwave in 40 years has had on Britain's parks.

Photographs show many of the capital's usually lush, green spaces turned brown and yellow after a month of searing heat.

Popular south London sunbathing spots Greenwich Park and Clapham Common were pictured blanketed in parched, dead grass.

Tourist hotspot Parliament Square has also succumbed to scorching temperatures.

The Greater London Authority, which is in charge of maintenance of the square, said new grass seeds will have to be sown to repair the damage.

A GLA spokeswoman said: “The grass at Parliament Square has suffered due to the hot, dry weather, lack of rain and increased numbers of visitors during the summer.

It could also be the hottest day since June 1 2015 when highs of 36.7C were recorded at Heathrow Airport.
