Broad City almost had the perfect guest star

Abbi Jacobson has already opened up about the dream guest stars for ‘Broad City’ that she hopes to one day convince to appear on the show. But it turns out that there’s one actress that Jacobson and her ‘Broad City’ co-star, co-creator, and co-writer Ilana Glazer wanted to feature in the sitcom only for her to tragically turn it down.

Why tragically? Because it was none other than Academy Award winning actress Dame Judi Dench, whose mere appearance alongside Abbi and Ilana would have been so magical that there’s every chance it would have caused televisions across the world to explode because of their combined star power.

Abbi Jacobson made this admission during her appearance on What Happens Live, when she was quizzed as to whether or not anybody had ever rejected the chance to appear on ‘Broad City’. Jacobson confirmed that was the case, as she made the stunning revelation that it was “Dame Judi Dench.”

But it turns out there’s still hope, because Abbi Jacobson believes that it was the actresses’ representatives that turned down the show on her behalf rather than Dame Judi Dench herself.

“I don’t think she really was like had even a phone call and was like, ‘You know what? No.’ I think just her reps,” Jacobson explained, before she then provided further reason for why Dench’s appearance on ‘Broad City’ was only ever an outside shot.

“I think she lives, you know, in England,” Dench continued. “Or maybe not England. I don’t know exactly where she lives. But I don’t think she wanted to come over for the show.”

There’s only one way to find out if that’s actually the case, though, Abbi: you need to give her a phone call and get a concrete answer. Until she does just that I’ll forever harbour hope that Judi Dench will one day pop up in either Gowanus, Astoria, or some other preposterously hip spot in New York to provide sage advice for the girls.

Because, as Abbi herself put it during the same interview, “Wouldn’t that have been great?” It still could be, Abbi. It still could be.
