The estranged husband of a woman murdered in a south east London flat has handed himself in to police.

Martin Cavanagh, 34, was arrested on suspicion of murder after walking into a south London police station on Thursday.

Police found his estranged wife, Sophie Cavanagh, 31, dead at around 6.13pm on Sunday after being called to a flat on Chatterton Road in Bromley.

Her death was initially treated as "unexplained" but Scotland Yard launched a murder probe after initial findings from the post-mortem suggested it was "suspicious".

Before Cavanagh handed himself in, Sophie's mother, Dawn Larkin, told the Standard: “She was my baby, she was an angel. I have lost my baby. She was a wonderful mother and person. Everyone loved her.”

Mrs Larkin had said Mr Cavanagh “had a lot of issues” and added: “He needs to hand himself in. If not, he needs to be caught. We need the truth. If anyone sees him, please call the police.”

She said her daughter did not live at the flat where she was found and it is understood Mr Cavanagh had been renting it for the last two months.

Mrs Larkin said: “I didn’t know she was going there. This is devastating.”

Cavanagh remains in police custody.
